Before the Avengers: Infinity War hype floods the media, Sony made one swift push to tie fans over until said film drops. Venom's first trailer was not exactly well recieved by critics or fans alike. People have long been skeptical about the Venom film.
After rumors that it would only have about 5 minutes of Venom screen
time, to the whole behind the scenes argument between Kevin Fiege and
Amy Pascal to whether or not Venom would be part of the MCU. But this trailer gets me feeling much, much better about things.
Tom
Hardy is looking incredible as both Eddie Brock and Venom, and the film
seems to be sticking quite close to the source material. Although it
doesn't look like Brock will have cancer, Deadpool already did
this, I do think it's something they could potentially bring in in a
later film in the Sony's Marvel Universe- as they're calling it.
According to Amy Pascal, Venom will be set in a world adjunct to the MCU. This means that it is set in the same world, its just whilst Venom may be impacted by the larger events of the MCU, Venom will
have no impact on the larger MCU. A way I look at it is like the MCU TV
shows. They take place within the same world, but the shows hold no
impact on the films, the films have impact on the shows though. Venom, if it is indeed still set adjunct to the MCU, will be the same.
This new poster for Venom is
truly magnificant and gets the feel and mood of Venom so correct. Eddie
and Venom are basically two seperate entities, with different motives,
sharing the same body. This poster represents that. Whilst I wish Eddie
had cancer, it would have been a great acting gig for Tom Hardy to play
with, and also give more connection between why Eddie needs Venom to
survive. But also- Venom looks fucking awesome.
One thing I will give Spider-Man 3 probs
for was its visual representation of Venom. Whilst the portrayal of
Eddie and Venom was horrible, Venom looked quite comic book accurate-
however he wasn't big or intimidating enough. This film looks to change
al that- I get serious It Pennywise the Dancing Clown vibes from Hardy's Venom, and you're about to find out why.
I will now break down my top 7 moments from the second Venom trailer.
7: Officially embrace anti-hero status
This
trailer told us to "embrace our inner anti-hero." This confirms Venom
will be an anti-hero which I am fine with personally. I hope he is more
villain than hero personally. Anti-hero movies are getting much more
popular since Suicide Squad released last year. I hope Venom plays up the villain aspect.
6: The plot explained
For
many, the plot of this movie has long been a mystery. We know that
Spider-Man won't be in the film, as he is with Marvel at the moment, and
Venom is one of the main Spidey enemies, so many were wondering if a
Spidey-universe without Spidey could work. We know that Venom will begin the Sony Marvel Universe, which is set to be set in an adjunct world to the MCU, and the SMU will continue with Silver & Black, the
Silver Sable and Black Cat movie. But how will the universe move
forward without a Spider-Man- who all these characters are supposed to
revolve around? Well, this film may have the answer. Eddie Brock is a
reporter- his job is to annoy people to get a good story. He finds some
shady shit going down with some shady businessmen, and soon he becomes
involved in a much greater scheme. There are many symbiotes locked up by
these businessmen, and Eddie gets infected. He will persumably help
Venom free the other symbiotes and in doing so form a connection to the
symbiote- whether it be for good or for bad. I am excited.
5: First experience
This
is persumably the scene where Eddie realises the symbiote he linked
with also gives him powers. Its a great moment, with great visuals and
great face, body and voice acting by Tom Hardy. It looks to be perhaps
one of the many standout moments in the film.
4: Motorbike chase
The
motorbike chase scene was truly thrilling and I am excited to see it
take place on screen. As Eddie rides through the street- perhaps he
hasn't worked out how to swing yet, we see the symbiote helping him
escape his pursuers in multiple different ways. We see the black webs
helping him take out following cars and help Eddie jump in the air and
stay steady. Its super enthrilling and I cannot wait to see it on
screen. All American action movies have some kind of car chase scene,
but Venom's has the potential to be a standout.
3: The voices in his head
When
Eddie fuses with Venom he begins to go a little crazy. Eddie and Venom
are two seperate entities sharing the same body. When Venom fuses with
Eddie in the trailer, Eddie suddenly doesn't only have his innocent
voice in his head. Suddenly he also has the not so innocent voice,
Venom, in his head. This is where the anti-hero aspect comes into Venom.
Whilst Eddie overall isn't that bad a guy, Venom brings out a different
side. I am excited to see this conflict. But again, a great storyline
would have been Eddie suffering from cancer and his suit is the only
thing keeping him alive. Although Deadpool already did this, Venom could have taken it in a much more dramatic route, unlike Deadpool's mostly comedic take on the subject matter.
2: Pennywise vibes
This shot here was so exciting. And for a while it took me a bit to think about what it was from. Until I remembered- in It: Chapter 1, Pennywise
the Dancing Clown's face openss and his teeth become bigger and his
mouth stretches. It was a horrifying scene in the film. In this scene
Venom does something similiar. As his symbiote covers his face, the
teeth are shown as huge as his "mask" covers his face. It was literally
ripped right out of the comics. I loved it. This scene leads me to my
number 1 trailer moment, which is…
1: Venom first look
This
was the moment that made me truly have faith in this film. It comes out
later this year, and let me just say- I have been skeptical. But this
Venom- this is Venom ripped right from the comics! Just like Hardy
nailed his portrayal of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, I feel he
will also correctly portray Venom. From the black of his symbiote suit,
to the eyes, to that tongue Venom is so famous for. It seemed like
something ripped from the comics or the animated shows. It was, suffice
to say, perfect. I am hoping Venom himself gets more than five minutes
screen time. Past Hulk films have shown that using a character
sparingly is bad for a films success. No one goes to a superhero film to
not see the superhero in costume- so for Venom to work, we need
to actually see Venom for at least thirty minutes total. We know Tom
Hardy isn't afraid to not hide his face, even though he does look hot,
so I hope he can allow Venom to shine through. We want the character!
Now-
I have a bonus point to make. This trailer showed this- something Fox
and Sony Marvel films haven't done before- take a look;
"In association with Marvel."
Usually these Sony/Fox Marvel films just have a Marvel logo, and move
on. However this film pointed out it was made in association with
Marvel. This may confirm that Sony's Marvel Universe may take place in
the MCU, and have some imput from Marvel Studios and Kevin Fiege. This
is exciting.
After Avengers 4 it has been said that the untitled Spider-Man sequel
will spawn Spidey off into an entirely new universe. Could this mean
Tom Holland's Spidey may one day join the SMU, and fight Hardy's Venom
and Silver Sable and Black Cat. This little nod to Marvel may mean
bigger things to come, and that's exciting. I am super excited for Venom.
