I’m
not going to list out a whole lot of shows that have ‘more than decent’
endings, but I’m going to let you in on a great show that has, in my
opinion, the greatest finale EVER.
The show is Six Feet Under
In
short, this is a stunningly made show about a family that runs a
funeral home. As the name suggests, this show is all about death — death
in the family, death outside, different kinds of death, and how people
mourn, grieve, and try to overcome their loss.
It’s
an absolutely brilliant show, one of HBO’s finest. Great cast, great
directors, and outstanding writers. If you get a chance to watch the
director’s cut of certain episodes, I strongly recommend you to do it.
You’ll have either the director or the writer narrating the episode as
it plays along, describing to the viewers how every scene, every cut,
and every dialogue was carefully crafted and executed.
And then the series finale — Everybody’s Waiting (S05E12).
I
don’t really have the words to describe how beautiful this episode is.
There was a wonderful buildup to this final episode, with a lot of
shocking developments, some heart wrenching moments, and some hair
raising plot lines that lead to the final climax.
I’m
not going to get into details, but the final scene, where Claire
Fischer drives off into the horizon, listening to “Breathe Me”, with
snippets of the Fischer family’s future flashing by, is perhaps one of
the greatest television closing scenes, ever.
As
the camera zoomed out, one last time, showing Claire driving through
the desert, with the highway stretching into the wilderness for miles, I
realized I had been sitting down for who knows how long, transfixed and
mesmerized, with a massive lump in my throat, unable to come to terms
that the show had come to an end.
I
continued in the same position, staring blankly at my computer screen,
long after the credits had rolled, my mind still with the Fischer
family, reminiscing all the beautiful moments we shared together.
What a finale. What a show.
