I don’t know if this is a particularly interesting theory, but I have a theory. Look at this piece of concept art:
The
upside down has a broken traffic light, dead human bodies, and parked
cars, torn down buildings. None of which corresponds to ‘our’ dimension.
Obviously it’s not an exact copy of our world, but it has many
of the same elements. Things are completely reconfigured. Changing
something in our world doesn’t effect the other world, and vice versa.
I don’t think it’s a copy at all. I think that it is just one of the dimensions that Mr. Clarke was describing in The Acrobat and The Flea: One of the infinite numbers of dimensions that is incidentally identical to ours.
That
dimension has undergone serious changes, in some past that we didn’t
get to see. Some sort of unspecified parasitic fungal apocalypse has
befell this dimension. The air could be toxic, because it has been so
thoroughly inhabited by the parasite. The whole dimension is coated in
foreign organic matter. It’s not clear what it is, but we do see that
the Demigorgon is not killing humans for his own needs in the finale,
where we can see that he has given Will to some kind of massive parasite
for feeding.
I think that the demigorgon,
is like a spore of a much larger super organism. I think that that super
organism travels from dimension to dimension, devouring each in turn.
It clearly has inter-dimensional ability, but cannot stay separated from
it’s super organism for long. It was by sheer accident that the
creature found out about ‘our’ dimension, while eleven was travelling
through it.
Will may even have been chosen
as a vector for the creature. The next season might be about the
creature taking over our dimension.
