I
am not going talk about social commentary or the social significance of
the movie but I believe it is because of this one character.
Erik
Killmonger is the best part of the entire movie, he surpasses the cool
Technology, he surpasses Wakanda’s look and he surpasses Chadwick
Boseman Black Panther to become possibly the best MCU villain ever. An
the reason is simple because of his story and his intentions.
Lets analyse his back-story:
A kid whose father was killed by the ruler of a secluded unknown kingdom and his birthright being the throne was taken from him. He then grew up in poverty, seeing the horrors of racism and how his kind is treated, He then trains and becomes a sufficient fighter and then returns to claim his birthright which was taken from him from the murderous king .
This
is a kind of story usually given to the protagonist, his motivations
are clear, understood and sympathized with. But what makes him the
antagonist is his method of execution. He is filled with rage because of
how he was denied his birthright and his kind suffers outside of
Wakanda whereas in wakanda they live like kings. His execution is
aggresive and violent and that is what makes him the villain.
His
attitude towards the matter is simple Wakanda can help but they don’ t,
they choose keep wealth to themselves and he wanted to change that. His
way was aggression and power play and T’Challa’s way was Empathy and
Diplomacy. This is why he was a great villain he wanted to achieve the
hero’s goal but his way was ludicrous but justified.
Killmonger’s
complexity is only brought out by Michael B Jordan’s performance which
brings out the traumatized and hurt kid who wants to redeem his
birthright.
Marvel has been improving
drastically on their villain’s, First with Killgrave on the small screen
and Vulture in Spider-man last year . This is great as this bring their
movies to a new point.
The complexity of
the villain, its motivations and impact on the story is why Black
Panther is being considered at such a high status.
